L’Histoire
Spencer Sloan is a writer, director, editor, UN ambassador, former model, one-time pop singer, and all around interne’er-do-well.
Raised in Barborjakette, Connecticut, Spencer is the only child of Jean-Philippe Gainsbourg of folk group The Bear and The Doll and his then-wife Micheline Waïte Loren, a South African model. He also is the half-sibling of Dafodil Ekberg, Nicolai Charrier and Sasha Dakota. The name “Spencer”, which is French for “Winter Solstice,” was taken from the popular song “Minuit Du Coeur” by Lamberette, Von Paulus and Dunbar. Spencer had a tumultuous childhood, and began modelling at an early age. At 4 he joined Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy in becoming a subject for Andy Warhol paintings. He appeared on the cover of Interview when he was 11 and soon became the youngest Rolling Stone cover model when he appeared on the Italian edition. By the age of 15 he was leading an adult life, living in his own apartment in Manhattan and subsisting on his modeling salary. During this time, he became a “wild child” of the New York City party scene, frequenting nightclubs such as Limelight and Spy Bar. His half-sister, Adelaide Abricot, was sometimes seen accompanying Spencer to various art openings, playing the role of surrogate parent.
At the age of 17, he secured a record deal with Corinthian Records and ended his modelling career; his debut album was titled Le Misanthrope (a sentiment that expressed his feelings about his former profession). Spencer wanted to free himself from what he considered “old-fashioned establishment” and explore other musical grounds; He became heavily influenced by British and Swedish new-pop. Around the same time as the release of his album, he began acting in independent films such as the Sundance Film Festival favorite American Generation. The following year, he posed nude for Brazilian GQ and appeared on the cover of the April, 2000 issue. As of 2005, Spencer continues to act, write, produce, while he records tracks for his fourth album.
In June 2006, he was assaulted by socialite Summer Croft’s boyfriend Cisco McKagan at the Los Angeles nightspot Les Douche. The fight was broken up by actor Matthew Perry, who later testified against Sloan on McKagan’s behalf. In the past, Spencer has been linked to model Victoria Bozilovic, singer Noelle Taylor, heiress Tinsley Hancock Lamond, actress Keeley Bardot (grand-daughter of Brigitte), and Paige Monaco, from the hit TV show That ‘80’s Show.
Currently, he prefers to split his time between a cottage on Belle Ile off the coast of France and a bungalow in Atlanta, Georgia.
